Look to the Holy One of Israel

“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help

and rely on horses

who trust in chariots because they are many

and in horsemen because they are very strong,

but do not look to the Holy One of Israel

or consult the LORD!”

(Is. 31:1)

The temptation of Israel in a moment of fear was to find their security in:

  • something established (Egypt)
  • something efficient (horses)
  • something numerous (people…safety in numbers)
  • something powerful (horsemen)

Simply put, their temptation was to find their security in something…ELSE. They found their security in something other than the LORD. When the pressure was on and the situation was urgent, they instinctively ran to the thing that they thought was most likely to give them the security they were looking for.

Are our temptations really much different? I am praying that the impulse of your heart today would be to lift your eyes to the Righteous and Holy One who is Lord of the Church (Acts 3:13-16).

“I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber or sleep.”

(Ps. 121:1-2)
