Strong Faith Provokes Strong Paganism

I am thoroughly enjoying reading The Early Church by Henry Chadwick. I found this statement to be thought-provoking:

“By the third century Christianity was widely disseminated in society throughout the empire. As the church grew there was a narrow intellectual revival of paganism, which probably owed much of its impetus to conscious or unconscious reaction against the challenge presented by the Christian attack.”

A weak church is always vulnerable, but sometimes a strong church will invite the fiercest opposition. Surely, this is just as true in our day.
