Israel “played the harlot with the Baals” – Judges 8:33
Do you like sports? Do you love sports? Do you love sports more than you love Christ and his church? How do you know?
Sometimes enthusiastic idolatry is the most subtle kind. One way you can discern this is when your love of sports causes you to neglect your Christian calling or duties. Neglect of Christian duties shows a deficiency in our faith. It shows that our first love is really somewhere else. If your sports schedule interferes with or takes precedence over your fellowship and service in the church then, practically speaking, you are more of an idolater than you are a Christian.
The solution? Love God with all your heart. And let your sports be sanctified to you by means of the word of God and prayer (1 Tim. 4:4). Let the Scripture remind you of the superior goodness of God and his gospel. And let the Scripture reassert to you the primary responsiblity on those who are claiming the name of Christ.
