God’s Sovereignty Is For Comfort Not Curiosity

As I prepare to preach on the providence of God in James 4:13-17, I am thinking much about the way God’s sovereign care impacts the lives of his people. There is much to say here but let me wet your appetite with this helpful reminder from John Calvin regarding the goal of teaching on God’s sovereignty:

“We should have said enough concerning God’s providence to achieve the perfect instruction and comfort of believers (for nothing whatsoever can be sufficient to satisfy the curiosity of vain men, nor ought we wish to satisfy it)…” John Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, I. XVII.12.
